The Sunday Telegraph’s personal finance editor laid into the government’s Care Bill, currently on its way through Parliament, which he said would neither make it clear to families how much they would need to pay nor put a cap on the costs.
The theoretical ‘cap’ of £72,000 on costs applies only to the health element of care home fees, and only at the rate set by local authorities. So someone could easily spend £130,000 of their own money on residential care before becoming eligible for state support – which might still not in fact cover all their costs.
