Another turn of the screw

George Osborne has proposed new measures to continue the (clearly supportable) clampdown on tax evasion, reports the Daily Telegraph. At the moment, if Britons have offshore accounts, the tax authorities have to prove tax evasion is intended. The Chancellor wants to change this so that the burden of proof is on the taxpayer, who will have to show that there was no tax evasion intended.

With so much of the £32 billion “Tax Gap” being contributed to by evasion it is hardly surprising that this initiative is underway.
